Many colleges and company programs offer "other styles" of scholarships and free monies. Some examples are "tryouts, auditions and portfolios." The range of competitions and contests are as broad as the financial award; some are easy and some require a little effort. The positive way to view it is "free money"! Stay in close touch with the college of your choice and check with the Guidance Office for these types of awards.
One thing of importance for you and for parents is filling out the FAFSA, which is completed as soon as possible after January 1. You will need your tax information for 2011. Please check with your tax preparer to see what will give you and your child the best options and overall results.
1-The FAFSA is completed online now. Make sure that you go to www.fafsa.ed.gov. This is the official and free site.
2-ALSO, you and your parent will need separate FAFSA PIN numbers. Go to www.pin.ed.gov and you will be taken through the simple process.
3-Stay in touch with the Financial Aid Officer and the Admissions Representative of the institutions of your choice, for FAFSA information as well as scholarship and award information.

JUNIORS
You and your parent may call to set up a visit to any college this spring. There are numerous "Junior Days" and other days you may schedule a one-on-one visit just for you. You can go online to any college and call their admissions office number. Here is the list of the major public universities in Kansas and their admissions number:

You may also choose a private college, community college or vocational-technical college for your visit. Stop by the Guidance Office if you need any help.
Any student who is considering athletics at the NAIA or NCAA level is required by their specific eligibility centers to have your ACT scores sent directly to them from ACT. You can do this separately, or you can have your scores sent when you take your ACT.
The code number for the NAIA is: 9876 and the code number for the NCAA is: 999.
Now is the time to pay attention to the ACT test dates in the Spring of 2012. The remaining date is June 9 - (sign up by May 4).

The American Legion sponsors three programs during the summer; Boys' State, Cadet Law Enforcement Academy and Girls' State. If you are interested in one of these programs, see Mr. Zeltwanger asap.

GRADES 9-12
KU offers numerous summer programs for students interested in Law. If you are interested in a future career in law and want to see what is available, see Mr. Zeltwanger as soon as possible. Deadlines are rapidly approaching.
Attention all high school students interested in the medical field or athletic training. Garden City Community College is sponsoring an Athletic Trainer Camp, July 23-25th. The cost is $220 for meals, lodging and the camp. Your transportation and incidental expenses are not included. This is the longest running sports trainer camp in Kansas and it includes First Aid/CPR certification, injuries and rehabilitation, cadaver dissection and cryotherapy modality.
